Your baby goose may be small and cute, but they are also full-grown geese. They require a lot of attention, care, and feeding. Follow these helpful tips to make sure your goose is getting everything it needs and deserves.

7 Ways to Take Care of Your Baby Goose

Feed Your Goose

Geese are such big birds that they require quite a bit of food. The average adult goose needs at least 5 pounds of quality feed per day, which equates to approximately 3 cups per hour. In the winter, this amount of feed will increase because geese need more protein to keep them warm. It is important that you give your goose the correct food for their age and stage of life. If you get this wrong, it could lead to health problems for your baby goose.

Bath Your Goose

Geese do not come naturally equipped with feathers and so they have a tendency to get into some messy situations. Some may even take an accidental dip in a puddle of water or mud. To avoid any unfortunate incidents, it is important for you to bath your goose every week or two. It’s also suggested that you remove their droppings with a dry towel or by using white vinegar as this will help remove the smell of feces.

Shelter Your Goose

A goose needs a home. Geese are migratory birds and they like to roam far and wide, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need shelter.

Geese are attracted to water so it’s important your baby goose has a pond or pool that is big enough for them to swim in. They also need space to graze on the grass or eat from the ground if they are too young to fly.

If you live in an area with cold winters, it is important to make sure your geese have a cozy place to go inside when it gets too cold outside.

Geese can be very territorial, so you may need multiple shelters if you have more than one.

Play With Your Goose

The most important thing you can do for your baby goose is to play with it. Geese crave interaction, and playing is a fun way to interact with your goose. Grab a friend or family member and have some fun with your baby goose!

Bond With Your Goose

Your baby Goose will grow up quickly, and before you know it they’ll be off on their own. Make the most of your time bonding with your baby goose by finding a good balance between being gentle and being firm. Offer food or water if they are hungry, but don’t offer anything if they don't need it. Take care of your baby goose by getting to know them-- find out what type of noises they make and what type of food they like.

Train Your Goose

Geese are very tame and can be trainable. If you have a goose that is used to being around people, then you can easily teach it what you want it to do.

If your baby goose has been living with humans for awhile, then they should be pretty tame and observant of what is happening around them. Geese will learn from their environment and the people around them. They may follow you around the house or yard, waiting for food. Train your geese by teaching them tricks like sitting, standing on one leg, rolling over, and more. You can do this by using rewards like treats or verbal praise. Once they get the trick down pat, give them a new lesson!

Get Comfortable With Handling Your Goose

Many people shy away from handling geese because of their size and the way they behave. It might seem like a lot of work for some, but it’s important to get comfortable with handling your goose. Your baby goose will want to be handled often to feel secure and loved. They need to be fed, cleaned, and played with. If you don’t handle them much, they will not feel happy or loved. Handling your baby goose is a great bonding experience for both of you!
